Trying to replace string in document editor with £ gives weird output

I'm trying to replace some text in a word document with a string from a database, which includes a  sign.

sorry for the brevity of the post I kept getting the message about illegal content! grrr.

Trying to replace a string in the document with a £ sign results in the document containing &193; instead.
