SfLinearGauge is not showing up

Followed the getting started guide here https://help.syncfusion.com/xamarin/sflineargauge/getting-started to the letter for version 16.4.0.48. The control does not display at all on any available android device/simulator (genymotion). There is just an empty space where the control is supposed to be. The page where the control is placed is implemented in a PCL that is used in android/ios projects. Any ideas/suggestion what could be the cause?

It should be noted that a couple of other syncfunction controls (sfCalendar and sfCombobox) are used similarly and there are no issues with them at all.
