The trends and advancements of technology change the scene almost faster than developers can keep up. So when the direction of a company needs to shift with the times, familiarity and shortcuts are welcome reliefs.
With technology going mobile, 2434.com Limited needed to adapt Backstage, an app built on Windows Forms for managing all aspects of professional classical orchestras, to run on mobile platforms. First, they tried a JavaScript hybrid platform, but it required all their code to be rewritten from C# to JavaScript and had limited access to native platform resources. And then Xamarin came to their attention. After scouring providers for components, they found Syncfusion’s suite of over 90 Xamarin controls. Most importantly, that suite included a scheduler.
“Without Syncfusion’s Xamarin.Forms scheduler, we couldn’t consider using Xamarin,” said Joth Pigott, the managing director. “We don’t have the in-house expertise to develop a control of that complexity.”
Xamarin allows 2434.com Limited to use C# to port all their business logic and back-end code with only minor tweaking, making the transition much faster and simpler. The company made extensive use of Syncfusion’s support team, and were relieved to have help when they encountered problems.
“We wanted a status bar on each event, which the Syncfusion scheduler doesn’t offer out of the box,” said Pigott. “However, in under 24 hours, their free community support returned a project showing us how to enhance the scheduler to show the status of an event.”
Pigott says they still have a lot of code to port, but he believes they’ve picked the very best tools for the job.
